KOTA SAMARAHAN, June 28: A 54-year-old van driver died while receiving treatment after a pickup truck allegedly lost control and crashed into his vehicle along Jalan Kota Samarahan–Asajaya yesterday afternoon.
Acting Kota Samarahan Police chief DSP Barry William said the accident occurred at about 3.30pm at Kilometre 10 of the road.
Initial investigations found that the pickup, driven by a 29-year-old woman, was travelling from Kuching towards Asajaya when it allegedly lost control, veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the oncoming van.
“The pickup driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle before skidding into the opposite lane and colliding with the van,” he said in a statement today.
Both drivers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Sarawak General Hospital for treatment.
Barry said the van driver succumbed to severe liver and spleen injuries at 9.39pm while undergoing treatment.
A 67-year-old woman who was travelling in the van escaped unhurt.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Police are also conducting further investigations, including tracing independent witnesses, reviewing nearby CCTV footage and sending both vehicles to PUSPAKOM and the Chemistry Department for examination. — DayakDaily
