Weak 3.3-magnitude earthquake hits Sabah’s Kuamut, no tsunami threat to Malaysia

KINABATANGAN, Sept 26: A weak earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale struck Kuamut, Sabah, at 5.32am today, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

MetMalaysia said the quake’s epicentre was located at latitude 5.1 degrees north and longitude 116.8 degrees east, at a depth of 118 kilometres.

The tremor occurred about 223 kilometres northwest of Tarakan, Indonesia, and 32 kilometres southwest of Tongod, Sabah.

The department said the earthquake posed no tsunami threat to Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station chief Suriyadi Drawis said a team of six firefighters was deployed at 6.26am to conduct monitoring and patrols in the Kinabatangan area following reports of the tremor.

The team inspected several locations, including the Sabah Economic Development Corporation (Sedco) premises, the Bukit Garam Library and Bukit Garam Point, as well as other areas identified as potentially vulnerable.

“No collapses or structural damage were found at any of the buildings inspected,” Suriyadi said in a statement.

He added that residents had been advised to remain alert and follow official updates as a precaution against possible aftershocks. — Bernama
