KUCHING (March 24): A small hole by the roadside near SJK Chung Hua No. 3 at Jalan Padungan here was caused by a pipe burst, said Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

He said the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has temporarily covered the hole, which had been highlighted in a viral video.

“Today they started to dig up, there’s a water pipe that burst. So temporarily, we have to have our temporary measure. So, we have backfilled with large stones to provide a stable base.

“Then we applied a layer of our premix for the surfacing. Then we put a cone to alert the public and we will get Sarawak Water to come in to do the repairs,” he told reporters at Tupong assemblyman Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house.

While acknowledging the public’s concern, he stressed reporting issues straight to the relevant authorities would lead to faster and more effective action.

“As Kuching continues to grow, it reflects on our city’s image. Social media has no boundaries, it spreads quickly and goes viral even at the national or international level, which may not portray our city image positively.

“For example, if there is a fire, you call the fire department immediately, you don’t post it on social media first. So, let’s change that attitude,” he said.
