KUCHING, Aug 19: A total of 120 mission schools in Sarawak will benefit from RM20 million in aid from Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) this year.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the aid will help the schools to construct or renovate existing buildings, and buy new furniture, and IT and sports equipment, among others.
“We hope with the new buildings and the upgradings, or better and more complete facilities, our students will enjoy a more conducive studying atmosphere.
“We also hope all schools receiving such aid will follow the financial regulations in spending based on the scope of their applications,” he said in a press statement today.
The aid was presented by Uggah to advisors of the various religious authorities, which later will be handed over to the respective elected representatives for them to distribute to the schools.
Meanwhile, at the presentation ceremony, 44 schools under the Anglican Diocese of Kuching received a total of RM7,874,040.
A representative of the Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn received the cheques for the amount on their behalf.
A sum of RM5,039,360 was given to 32 schools under the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kuching. Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil received the cheques on their behalf.
Meanwhile, 23 schools under the Roman Catholic Church of Sibu Diocese received a total of RM3,622,040.
These schools were represented by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Art Datuk Snowdan Lawan.
Seven schools under the Roman Catholic Church of Miri Diocese received aid totalling RM1,102,360. A representative of Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin received the cheques for the amount on their behalf.
Federal Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi who was present meanwhile received cheques totaling RM1,259,840 on behalf of eight schools under the Methodist, Sarawak Iban Annual Conference (SIAC).
Six schools under the Methodist, Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference (SCAC) received a total of RM1.102,360. They were represented by a representative of the Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom. — DayakDaily
