SIBU (Jan 19): Fourteen people were left homeless after a fire destroyed seven units of workers’ quarters at the Kemuyang landfill here yesterday.

Sibu Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 4 chief Andy Alie said they received a distress call from a Sibu Municipal Council officer at 12.29pm reporting the incident.

“A total of 14 firefighters from the Sungai Merah fire station were deployed to the scene and upon their arrival, found the fire had destroyed seven units of workers’ quarters,” he said in a statement.

He said the fire was successfully brought under control and overhaul works were carried out before the team installed safety netting at the site.

The operation concluded at 2.28pm with no casualties or injuries reported.
