KUCHING, Mar 27: A bush fire covering an estimated 16 hectares broke out behind the Ngu Chung Beng driving institute along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman in Sibu this morning, prompting a multi-agency response to contain the blaze.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), an emergency call was received at 8am, and a team from the Sibu Central station was deployed to the scene.
The operations commander instructed personnel to deploy two portable pumps drawing water from Sungai Merah to combat the flames. Hose lines measuring 500 feet and 300 feet were used to channel water from the open river source to the affected area.
On the first day of operations, approximately one hectare of the affected area was extinguished.
Firefighting operations were suspended at 5pm and are scheduled to resume tomorrow as crews continue efforts to fully contain the blaze.
Several other agencies also assisted at the scene, including the Civil Defence Force (APM), Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), police, the Lanang Community Volunteer Fire Brigade, Sarawak Energy, the Public Works Department (JKR), People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela), and an excavator.
No injuries or casualties were reported. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as firefighting efforts resume. — DayakDaily
