MIRI (Jan 5): A temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at the SMK Bekenu multi-purpose hall was activated on Sunday afternoon to house flood victims in the area.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said the centre is currently accommodating 166 victims from 51 households.

According to SDMC, those evacuated are from Kampung Kawang and Kampung Jenggalas in Bekenu.

“As of 8am today, the number of evacuees remains unchanged,” it said.

Meanwhile, Batu Niah fire station chief Rary Binjie said the water level at the Bekenu bazaar has remained stagnant since Sunday night.

He added that water levels of more than one foot were recorded in several areas of the bazaar.

“However, the flood situation in Bekenu, particularly in the bazaar area, is under control. Our personnel remain on standby to respond to any changes in water levels due to the unpredictable weather,” he said.
