KUCHING, May 26: Two children were among the 12 foreign nationals, along with a 27-year-old local man, who were detained by the General Operations Force (PGA) Battalion 10 Sibu Intelligence Unit and Task Force during an operation at the Lubok Antu–Badau border area at about 3.30am on Monday (May 25).
In a statement, Lubok Antu district police chief DSP Pricha Azin said police tracked two vehicles used by the suspects as they transported the foreign nationals along an ungazetted route in Ensawang, Lubok Antu.
“Investigations revealed that one of the four-wheel-drive vehicles was driven by the local man, while the second vehicle, a sedan, was driven by a foreign national who was transporting other foreign nationals who did not possess valid travel documents,” he said.
In addition, police also seized two vehicles, one outboard boat engine, and two mobile phones belonging to the two suspects believed to have acted as ‘land skippers’ (tekong darat) in the migrant smuggling operation.
The case is being investigated under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (ATIPSOM), and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. — DayakDaily
