MIRI: Twenty-five people from three families were affected after a fire destroyed three units of a wooden longhouse in Ulu Tinjar, Baram, today.
The fire broke out at Rumah Wannie Kana, Sungai Langsat, with the affected units, identified as doors No. 4, 5 and 6, reported to have been completely destroyed.
No injuries or fatalities were reported, according to the Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA).
The Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station received an emergency call at 8:20 am and dispatched a team a minute later.
Firefighters arrived at the scene at 11:05 am, after travelling approximately 135 kilometres.
A team from the Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station was already at the scene conducting firefighting operations when the Lopeng team arrived.
The teams worked together to extinguish the blaze using water from fire engines before carrying out overhaul operations to ensure no remaining embers could reignite the fire.
The fire was brought under control at 11:20 am, with the operations officially ending at 12:14 pm.
Police and Sarawak Energy Berhad’s personnel also assisted at the scene.
The cause of the fire was not stated in the department’s report.
