IGAN, 24 September: The Sarawak Department of Marine Fisheries (JPLS) managed to remove about 300 kilograms of ghost turtles trapped on the delayed turtle barrier in Igan waters.

The three-day Phantom Pukat Disposal programme started on 22 September and continues today to ensure that the fish stocks continue to function as a habitat and breeding area.

According to a statement from JPLS, an initial review last August found the delayed turkeys tied to the barrier tubes being rolled out in 2022.

"The situation suggests that the fishermen have succeeded in helping preventing the invasion of late-flight vapour fibre in fishing areas within seven nautical miles.

"Throughout the program, divers managed to extract some 300 kilograms of ghostly turkeys attached to the stove", the statement said.

The efforts also help to keep the breeding grounds clean and function optimally as habitat and aquaculture area.

The programme involves staff of the Fisheries Resources Branch Catch, Fisheries Conservation and Protection Branch, Bintawa Fisheries Research Institute, Regional Fisheries Office 1 as well as Regional Fisheries Office Okah and Sematan.

The programme thus supports JPLS' efforts to ensure the sustainability of Sarawak's fisheries resources and aquatic ecosystem. - TVS
