MIRI (Aug 9): A total of 428 police personnel will be on duty during the duration of the Sukma Games here from Aug 11 to 25 to ensure the safety of contingents, VIPs and members of the public.

In addition, 216 police as well as 25 traffic police personnel will be deployed and stationed at various locations over the 15 days to ensure safety, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata told a press conference here today.

“Safety is especially important as we will be having 12,619 people including athletes, coaches, officers, and that would include the contingents from Brunei Darussalam.

“Personnel from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will be focusing on traffic control and monitoring as well as managing vehicle parking at event venues.

“They will be manning the security and public order at sports venues and athletes villages/venues for opening and closing ceremonies of the championships.

“Therefore, it is very important to monitor and provide all forms of security assistance,” Mancha told the press at IPD Miri Ruai Kenyalang.

He encouraged those attending the opening and closing ceremonies and the events of the 21st Sukma Games to always comply with the laws and instructions given by the police officers on duty.

“The public are also urged to cooperate and follow the guidelines provided,” he added.

Miri will be hosting six events – fencing, karate, pencak silat, rugby, softball and sailing.

Also attending the press conference was Miri District police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu.
