7-day remand for man over fatal stabbing of son using fishing spear

MIRI (Jan 13): A man in his 50s here has been remanded for seven days until Jan 20 in connection with the death of his son, who was stabbed with a fishing spear.

Magistrate Ashok Linggam issued the remand order following an application by investigating officer ASP Anuar Affindi.

In the application, Anuar said based on a police report lodged, the incident took place around 7.30pm on Monday in the compound of a house in Piasau Utara during a dispute between the suspect and his 20-something son.

The dispute escalated into a scuffle, during which the suspect allegedly stabbed his son in the chest with a fishing spear.

The seriously injured victim was rushed to Miri Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Acting on information received, police arrested the suspect in the Pujut area later the same night.

Anuar informed the court that a seven-day remand was needed to enable police to complete the investigation, including recording a cautioned statement from the suspect, taking statements from witnesses, and seizing relevant exhibits.
