KUCHING (Jan 1): A total of 795 victims from 205 households have been placed at seven temporary evacuation centres (PPS) activated across Sarawak as of 1.30pm, following flooding in Kuching and a landslide in Miri.
The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said in a statement that the incidents involved two affected districts, with the evacuation trend showing an increase, particularly in the Kuching area.
“Six PPS have been activated in the Kuching district involving 791 victims from 204 households due to flooding, while one PPS in Miri is housing four victims from one household following a landslide,” the statement said.
In Kuching, the affected areas include Taman Desa Wira, Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Kampung Sungai Batu, Kampung Surih Iban, Taman Malihah and Kampung Sejijak.
Among the PPS opened are the Stapok Community Hall, R. Piang Hall at Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Surau Ar-Rahman at Kampung Sungai Batu, Surau Nurul Najhin Hall in Stapok, the Taman Malihah Multipurpose Hall and SK Chung Hua Sejijak.
According to SDMC, several PPS recorded an increase in the number of evacuees, while the rest remain under close monitoring by the relevant agencies.
Meanwhile in Miri, the PPS at the Red Crescent Hall was activated to accommodate victims from Kampung Lusut Jaya, with the situation reported to be under control.
SDMC also advised members of the public in at-risk areas to remain vigilant, comply with instructions from the authorities and to move immediately to the designated PPS if directed.
“Continuous monitoring will be carried out from time to time to ensure the safety of affected residents is always safeguarded,” the statement said.
