KUCHING, Mar 23: In the early hours of this morning, a fire broke out at a temporary workers’ transit accommodation facility near the Bakun Dam in Bintulu.

In a report from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), a call was received at 4.02am, and firefighters from the Belaga station were deployed.

Upon arrival, firefighters found that the blaze had already engulfed eight container-type rooms used as temporary lodging for construction workers. Each unit measured approximately 10 by 16 square feet. The containers were part of a larger block consisting of 24 similar units.

Firefighters managed to prevent it from spreading to adjacent units and brought the fire under control by 5.30am.

“The Emergency Response Team (ERT) at Bakun had earlier initiated initial firefighting efforts before the arrival of Bomba personnel, helping to limit the spread of the flames,” said the report.
