MELAKA, 6 Oct: After making a name for himself as one of the country's best sprinters, Anuar Manan now has a different mission to find talent from Sarawak who can follow in his footsteps and emerge as the new national cycling star.
Former Raja Pecut Jelajah Malaysia for three consecutive years is now the head coach of track and highway cycling in Sarawak, with a primary focus on identifying and developing local talent.
He wants to use his experience to unlock new talents in the Earth of Enlightenment.
"I want this effort to start at the school level with selection based on set criteria, while management in each district can help identify talent.
"It may have been different before, but my experience in cycling can help identify riders who have the potential to be promoted to a higher level", he said when interviewed by TVS at Le Tour De Langkawi (LTdL) 2026 recently.
He believes that identified talents need to be developed in stages so they don't just blend into their respective age groups, but are able to move up the ladder.
He said that sustained development is also important to ensure that Sarawak does not only rely on achievements during Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA), but instead has a coating capable of maintaining the state's performance in the long term.
"We don't want to succeed in school, then the development stops. We don't want that success to happen just one at a time".
"I want to make sure that momentum is maintained forever. I believe Sarawak will be a new power in cycling", he said.
Anuar's conviction was also driven by Sarawak's achievements in SUKMA 2026 when the state won three gold medals and three bronze.
However, he saw the achievement as a start because Sarawak has a talented racing team to continue developing.
"If you look at Sarawak, there are talented and strong racers. Genetically speaking, Sarawak people are strong.
"That's where I came to Sarawak to explore my potential", he said.
With the two years before SUKMA 2028 in Kelantan, Anuar wants to use that time to form more runners and ensure Sarawak's talent development does not stop after one tournament. - TVS
