BINTULU (Feb 12): The Medan Jaya Flyover project here has surpassed 70 per cent completion and is on track to be fully finished by December this year, said Johnny Pang.
The Tanjong Batu assemblyman visited the construction site on Wednesday with officers from the Public Works Department (JKR) Bintulu and the contractor to review progress and assess the current traffic situation.
“The project has progressed well and is now over 70 per cent completed. We expect it to be fully completed by December,” he said in a statement after the visit.
With Chinese New Year approaching, Pang instructed all relevant agencies to strengthen road safety measures along the construction stretch to ensure motorists’ safety.
He said clear and visible road signage must be in place, and traffic arrangements, including temporary diversions and traffic lights, should be properly managed to minimise confusion and congestion.
“At present, the speed limit in the construction area is 50 kilometres per hour. Motorists are advised to slow down, remain alert, and drive carefully,” he stressed.
The contractor has assured that its team will remain on standby throughout the festive season, with paving machinery, local crews, and workers available round the clock to maintain road conditions.
“Although the road conditions may not be perfect during the holidays, it is crucial to ensure the surface remains even and free of potholes. Any damage from increased traffic will be repaired immediately to prevent safety risks,” he added.
The Medan Jaya Flyover is designed to ease congestion and improve traffic flow in one of Bintulu’s busiest commercial areas, particularly during peak hours.
Once completed, it is expected to enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, and support the town’s growing economic activities.
Funded by the federal government at a cost of RM137.7million, the project was initially delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and utility relocation works.
