SIBU (Jan 16): A 44-year-old Indonesian man feared drowned after falling into Sungai Rejang near Jalan Upper Lanang on Jan 13 has been found dead, ending a three-day search and rescue (SAR) operation.
The victim, identified as Muhaji, was discovered floating in Sungai Ulu Lepa near Rumah Dadat, Bintangor — about 69km from the site of the incident.
Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 4 Sibu chief Andy Alie said the body was found by members of the public at around 10.30am before authorities were alerted.
“The victim’s body was discovered by the public and later confirmed by the Meradong police.
“Identification carried out at Sarikei Hospital confirmed that the deceased was the man reported missing after falling into Sungai Rejang in Sibu,” he said when contacted.
According to police reports, the incident occurred at around 6pm when the victim was believed to have slipped and fallen into the river while bathing near the sand carrier vessel Megakina 9, where he was working.
The victim’s remains were handed over to the police for further action.
