SIBU (Aug 9): The Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) 2024 tonight started with a splash with over 30,000 people coming in droves to watch the opening parade.
Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting flagged off the parade comprising five contingents, which started from BCF arch at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 here tonight.
Meanwhile, the Guest-of-Honour, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian officiated at the Art and Culture Exhibition Belt, before officiating at the opening of the BCF.
Also present were Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng and Sibu MP Oscar Ling among the invited guests.
SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley, who is the festival’s organising chairman, recently said he expected an increase of participants in this 20th edition of the BCF.
“For past editions, the council recorded approximately 15,000 to 20,000 visitors during the 10-day event.
“This year, we expect 30,000 visitors,” he said.
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is set to officiate at the closing ceremony on Aug 17.
