KUCHING (March 7): A nine-year-old boy was killed while five others suffered serious burns after a double-storey house in Taman Sentosa Indah, Lorong 1, in Sri Aman was destroyed in a fire on Saturday morning.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) dispatched firefighters from the Sri Aman fire station after receiving a distress call at 3.02am.

“Two of the victims, a 65-year-old man and his 41-year-old daughter, were rescued by members of the public before the firefighters arrived.

“Both sustained serious burns on their bodies and were sent to hospital for further treatment.

“The burnt remains of a young boy, who was the man’s grandson, was later found on the upper floor of the house. His body was handed over to the police for further action.

“Three more victims, the elderly man’s 40-year-old daughter and his grandchildren aged 14 and 15 also sustained burns to their feet and were sent to hospital,” Bomba said.

Three vehicles consisting of a compact car, a sedan and a motorcycle were damaged in the incident.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze, and overhaul work was carried out to ensure the fire was fully put out.

The operation ended at 5.35am.
