KUCHING (Jan 18): Over 200 needy households and individuals here received essential supplies and angpows (red packets) from the Che Hui Khor Moral Uplifting Society in connection with this year’s Lunar New Year.
The charity event was officiated by Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, and aimed to spread joy, cheer and warmth for the underprivileged.
Dr Sim said donating to the less fortunate was an act of sharing and promoting a caring attitude.
“Handing out supplies to those who need them is a charitable act, which fulfils corporate social responsibility. Not only does it join forces for a good cause, it reaches out to individuals who need assistance.
“Making the underprivileged feel cared about and respected matters,” he said in his speech, which was delivered by Wee.
Dr Sim added that the state government would continue to uphold and practise its people-friendly policies for the betterment of all Sarawakians.
“Through the state Social Welfare Department and other relevant agencies, the Sarawak government provides various kinds of assistance for different groups including senior citizens, low-income households, and persons with disabilities.
“The state government will also enhance collaboration with community-based organisations to carry out more charitable campaigns for the underserved. While the government is obligated to help the underprivileged, assistance from the local community is driven by love and care. When these two work together, no one in society will be left behind,” he said.
