SIBU (Dec 7): The Chinese language is the foundation of Chinese culture that is cultivated and instilled from early childhood, said Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau.
The Sarawak China Graduates Alumni Association (SCGAA) permanent honorary advisor said that through reading, writing, expression and competitions, children not only enhance their language abilities but also build confidence and cultural identity.
“Participating in competitions is a form of learning in itself, and in cultural and academic contests, there are no real losers because each participant gains valuable experience and growth,” he said during the closing ceremony of the Sarawak Chinese Language Year-End Awards 2025 here yesterday.
Lau encouraged award winners to continue to work hard to improve their language skills and cultural literacy, and said the awards encouraged students to continue growing in the fields of language, culture, and the arts.
He also hoped more organisations and like-minded individuals would promote Chinese education so that Chinese culture could continue to shine in Sarawak.
He said this year’s awards covered four competitions, namely the 5th Silk Road International Youth Photography and Short Video competition; the 7th Impression Fuzhou competition; the Chinese Challenge for Primary One Students; and the 2nd Kindergarten Chinese Proficiency competition.
Lau said the kindergarten Chinese proficiency test and the competition for Primary One pupils adopted the international Youth Chinese Test standard, which enabled students to assess and improve their Chinese proficiency.
“The Silk Road International Youth and Impression Fuzhou competition are open to Chinese youths worldwide, and include painting, calligraphy, photography, short videos, and writing — giving local students opportunities to step onto the international stage and promote cultural exchange,” he said.
Meanwhile, Lau said since its establishment in 2016, the SCGAA has been committed to advancing Chinese education and cultural heritage while actively assisting students in furthering their studies in China.
“Over the years, SCGAA has built partnerships with numerous universities and institutions in China, including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
“In 2017, it became the first official HSK Chinese Proficiency Test centre in East Malaysia, bringing great convenience to Chinese learners in Sarawak,” he said.
