KUCHING (Jan 11): No other opposition party in Sarawak aside from Democratic Action Party (DAP) has demonstrated the conviction and consistency in truly fighting for the voice and rights of the people, said Chong Chieng Jen.
The DAP Sarawak chairman said the party’s longevity reflected its principles and refusal to compromise in the face of political pressure.
“Which opposition party in Sarawak can survive for 40 years? None. We had SNAP, PBDS, and PSB. All of them eventually could not withstand the pressure or temptations, and ended up dissolving or joining the government.
“Only DAP Sarawak has remained for 48 years, and we are still going strong. That is the conviction of us DAP Sarawak leaders and members,” he said during the opening ceremony of the renovated DAP Sarawak headquarters here yesterday.
The Stampin MP and Padungan assemblyman said since its inception, DAP Sarawak has faced many challenges that were not easy to overcome.
“Some leaders could not withstand the pressure imposed by the government; some could not withstand the temptations. That is why they left the party.
“But no matter how many leaders have left, we still have our core members and supporters who continue to help the party,” he said.
On the headquarters’ renovation, Chong said it was not just a physical upgrade but a symbol of the party’s resilience and dedication to serving the people.
“This office is not just for show. It is a witness to the development of DAP in Sarawak.
“Some of those who helped purchase this office in 2008 have passed away or left the party, and that in itself is a testimony of how challenging our journey has been,” he said.
Also present were DAP Sarawak founder Chong Siew Chiang, vice chairmen Mordi Bimol and Oscar Ling, secretary Alan Ling, treasurer Chiew Chiu Sing, assistant organising secretary Roderick Wong, publicity secretary Kelvin Yoo, and assistant publicity secretary Michael Kong.
