MIRI (Feb 9): Development initiatives and public policies can only succeed through strong support and close cooperation between the local community and the government, said deputy minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala.

He said this at an appreciation ceremony for the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Kampung Kuala Melinau, the Tagang Committee, and the Regatta Committee, held at Kampung Kuala Melinau in Mulu on Saturday.

“It is important that the spirit of consensus, ‘gotong-royong’ (communal work) and unity – particularly among residents in the Mulu state constituency – continues to be nurtured and upheld,” he said.

Gerawat emphasised that the JKKK plays a vital role as a bridge between the government and the people, ensuring that policies, plans and assistance are effectively communicated and implemented at the grassroots level.

The Mulu assemblyman expressed his appreciation to the JKKK of Kampung Kuala Melinau, describing it as the backbone of village-level administration and development.

He noted that the Tagang committee has played a significant role in conserving rivers and fishery resources in the village.

“The Tagang programme not only protects environmental sustainability but also provides long-term economic benefits to villagers,” he said.

Gerawat added that the initiative reflects strong community cooperation in preserving natural heritage for future generations.

He also extended his appreciation to the Regatta committee for its commitment and dedication in managing participation in regatta events throughout Sarawak, highlighting the notable achievements of the ‘Terawan Mulu’ regatta team, which won several competitions between 2023 and 2025.

“This ceremony is not merely a form of recognition, but a meaningful acknowledgement of the dedication, commitment and sacrifices of those who have worked tirelessly for the progress and well-being of our village,” he said.
