MIRI, 3 Oct: The role of Bukit Lambir National Park is increasingly important in supporting Miri's aspirations as a Green City through biodiversity conservation efforts, environmental education and sustainable ecotourism development.

Miri Mayor, Adam Yii Siew Sang said that the recognition of Bukit Lambir National Park as ASEAN Heritage Park reflects the importance of the area as a natural treasure to be valued and protected.

According to him, the Education and Public Awareness Program (CEPA) entitled The Insects of Lambir Hills National Park also increases public awareness about the important role of insects in forest ecosystems.

"Although small, insects play an important role in flowering, nutrient cycle and ecosystem balance", he said while addressing the closing ceremony of CEPA's The Insects of Lambir Hills National Park at Lambir Hills National Park, here today.

He said the initiative became a platform linking education, conservation, community and tourism aspects, while raising awareness of the importance of biodiversity.

"The programme also supports green economic development that benefits all, including creating sustainable economic opportunities for local communities through the development of national park guides, nature interpretation and biodiversity-based ecotourism products", he said.

He added that the efforts also contributed to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 11 related to Cities and Lestari Communities, SDG 15 related to Life on Land and SDG 4 related to Quality Education. - TVS
