MIRI (March 7): The appointment of community leaders reflects the trust placed in them by the government and the people, and carries a responsibility that must carried out diligently, said Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin.
The Senadin assemblyman described grassroots leaders as an important bridge between the government and the people, enabling authorities to better understand the needs and concerns of local communities.
Speaking at a Chinese New Year luncheon by the Miri Chinese Community Leaders Association here, he expressed appreciation for the long-standing contributions of community leaders who have worked tirelessly in their respective neighbourhoods.
“Community leaders have played significant roles in coordinating community affairs, assisting residents in resolving problems and organising activities that help foster unity and harmony within the community,” he said.
Lee added that the feedback and communication provided by community leaders allow the public to better understand government policies and directions, while also enabling the government to hear and respond to the voices of the grassroots.
He noted that many issues at the grassroots level are first brought to the attention of community leaders, including clogged drains, potholes, damaged streetlights and poorly maintained public facilities.
“While these issues may appear minor, they directly affect the daily lives and safety of the people,” he said.
As such, he encouraged community leaders to take the initiative to assist residents and promptly relay issues to the relevant authorities so that solutions can be implemented more efficiently.
He also emphasised the importance of communication and cooperation among grassroots leaders to ensure responsibilities are carried out effectively.
Present at the event were Pujut assemblyman mayor Adam Yii, Miri Resident Galong Luang; and other guests.
