KUCHING (Feb 20): The RM3 million upgrading for Serian Community Park is set to transform the town with a more dynamic and multipurpose public space under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA).

A Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report cited Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus as saying the upgrading project is currently in the consultant appointment phase and awaiting tender documentation before physical works can begin.

“Hopefully by next year, this place will have a new look,” he said during the launch of the Serian District Council Ramadan Bazaar on Thursday.

He explained that the redevelopment will adopt an open and flexible concept, allowing the area to be utilised for multiple purposes, including parking facilities, holding Ramadan bazaars, concerts, and large-scale community activities.

The Serian District Council Ramadan Bazaar features 69 stalls, providing locals with the opportunity to generate additional income during the fasting month.

On a related note, John said the proposed Gawai Bazaar is at the planning stage, with the date and programme yet to be confirmed.

“The proposed Gawai Bazaar will be discussed with the Serian District Council Office, the Resident’s Office, Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA), and the Remun Iban Association,” he said.

During the launch, John also presented aprons to vendors as a gesture of support and encouragement for them to continue delivering quality service to customers.

He thanked the Serian District Council, Serian Resident’s Office, and Serian Village Security and Development for ensuring the smooth running of the event.

“We hope traders will earn good income, while the public, especially residents in the surrounding areas, will continue to support this effort to enliven the Ramadan atmosphere in Serian,” he added.
