LUNDU: Contractors appointed for new development projects in Opar must begin work on schedule and deliver quality facilities within the agreed timeframe, said Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang.

He said project awards carried a responsibility to residents, with contractors required to meet specifications and maintain safety standards throughout construction.

“We do not want to see only projects being announced or letters of award being handed over.

“We want to see projects started, carried out, completed and ultimately benefiting the people,” he said when speaking at the Special Briefing on the Development of Opar Constituency and Letter of Award Presentation Ceremony for new Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) projects at CENTEXS Lundu today.

Twelve new projects were listed for the LOA presentation, comprising six agricultural road upgrades, three gravity water pipe upgrades and three multipurpose hall projects.

The road projects cover Kampung Sebandi Hilir, Kampung Sebandi Ulu, Kampung Senibong, Kampung Pasir Hulu, Kampung Biawak and Kampung Rumih, while the water projects involve Kampung Sepadah, Kampung Tembawang Sauh and Kampung Keranji.

The hall projects comprise an upgrade in Kampung Rukam and new buildings in Kampung Titiakar and Kampung Bitokan 2.

Opar’s September 2026 development summary lists 187 GKCDA projects worth RM149.98 million, with village and agricultural roads forming the largest component at 69 projects worth RM63.95 million.

Billy said coordination between GKCDA, district offices and implementing agencies was important in resolving constraints, while community leaders and village committees should monitor progress and report problems promptly.

“The true measure of development is whether residents enjoy better roads, more reliable water supply and improved public facilities,” he said.
