MIRI (Dec 28): Twenty-five fishermen and seafarers from Miri and Sibuti areas received ‘Mate Domestic Open Certificate of Competency’ at a ceremony held on Friday.
Organised by Pelita Maslaut Sdn Bhd, the 10-day course was a part of efforts meant to improve the competency and professionalism of local fishermen and seafarers.
“It aims to raise awareness and enhance participants’ understanding of maritime regulations and safety at sea, particularly during fishing activities or voyages in the open waters,” said the company in a statement.
It added that a similar programme would be held next year to provide opportunities for more fishermen and seafarers to undergo this certification training.
“The course is beneficial to local fishermen and seafarers as it helps them understand areas where fishing is prohibited, and the zones where fishing activities are permitted in the waters of Miri and Sibuti,” it said.
The certificates were presented to Pelita Maslaut Sdn Bhd managing director Masni Amit.
