KUCHING, April 3: A covered drain has been turned into a new parking strip at SJKC Chung Hua Tudan, easing long-standing traffic congestion outside the school.

The RM250,000 Rural Transformation Project (RTP) at Tudan Desaras 6B created about 25 parking bays, giving parents a proper place to stop and clearing previously clogged lanes during peak hours.

Sarawak Transport Minister and Senadin assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the area had been a bottleneck, with vehicles often reducing the road to a single usable lane.

“It was quite serious before, with parents’ cars blocking the road. Now traffic moves much more smoothly,” he was quoted by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) as saying during a site visit yesterday (Apr 2).

He added that a separate RM300,000 RTP project completed nearby last year delivered 35 parking bays and five dedicated bus spaces, further easing pressure in the area.

The latest works included an 80-metre-long, two-metre-wide covered concrete drain, installation of 600mm by 600mm grating covers, concrete paving, and new as well as repainted handrails along the pedestrian walkway.

School headmaster Law Sie Kong welcomed the upgrade, saying it has made traffic flow more orderly and improved safety for students.

The project not only expands parking capacity but also streamlines daily traffic, creating a safer and more conducive school environment. — DayakDaily
