Culture, tourism, arts seen as new avenues to strengthen Malaysia-Russia ties

ST PETERSBURG, Sept 27: Malaysia and Russia are seeking closer cooperation in tourism, arts, and culture following the St Petersburg International United Cultures Forum held here in Russia.

In a Facebook post, Malaysia’s Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Dato Sri Tiong King Sing said he attended a special event at the forum, where Russian President Vladimir Putin and Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova were also present, and Putin delivered an address during the forum’s plenary session.

“The forum is one of Russia’s key platforms for international cultural exchange, bringing together government representatives, cultural figures, and institutions from around the world.

“Its programme includes discussions, thematic exchanges and cultural performances focusing on cultural development, international engagement, and cooperation,” said Tiong.

In his speech, Putin said the forum’s theme, ‘United Cultures, Common Values’, underlined culture’s role in an increasingly complex international environment.

“He said culture can build bridges between people and remain an important channel for communication and dialogue, even when political and economic relations are affected by differences, sanctions or other restrictions,” said Tiong.

Citing Putin’s words that “unity does not mean uniformity”, Tiong said that Putin stressed that unity should be built on respect for the distinct identity and development of every country, people, and culture.

“The forum also provided a meaningful opportunity for Malaysia to engage with international partners through culture.

“Such exchanges help deepen mutual understanding and people-to-people ties, while opening the way for closer cooperation between Malaysia and Russia in tourism, arts, and culture,” said Tiong. — DayakDaily
