KUCHING, July 6: The Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak will assist students who achieved 10As and above but had their appeals to pursue matriculation courses rejected.

DAP Sarawal chairman Chong Chieng Jen urged those who wish to seek the party’s assistance to make an appeal to the Ministry of Education (MOE) to compile their information in a single PDF file and submit it as soon as possible.

The information required include the student’s name, IC number, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) result slip, Pentaksiran Aktiviti Jasmani, Sukan dan Kokurikulum (PAJSK) slip and an indication (Yes/No) of whether they have applied to the Unit Pusat Universiti (UPU).

“We will help to forward your appeals to the Minister of Education or the Deputy Minister of Education personally on Tuesday (July 9),” he assured in a press statement today.

Chong, who is also Stampin MP, pointed out that it is unacceptable and unfair for students who have scored 10As to have their applications rejected, in light of a guarantee from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for a spot in matriculation.

“It seems that the MOE has yet to make the necessary adjustment to be in line with the policy announcement made by the Prime Minister.

“Nevertheless, as we will be attending Parliament sitting in the coming two weeks, surely this issue will be brought up in Parliament should the public announcement made by the Prime Minister were not carried through by the MOE,” he added.

DAP Sarawak reiterated their assurance to assist in submitting the appeals to the Education Minister personally in Parliament once all appeals are received and compiled.

Affected students can submit their appeals to Michael Kong (013-819 9191), Sim Kiat Leng (016-426 2210), George Lam (011-2518 1872) and Jordan Soo Tien Ren (010-805 8276).

On June 30, Anwar announced that all SPM top scorers with 10As and above, regardless of background, would be guaranteed a spot in matriculation colleges starting with the 2025 intake.

He said the decision was reached after a Cabinet meeting on June 28 to ensure all top SPM students have the best opportunities to pursue higher education. — DayakDaily
