MIRI (Dec 27): DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) chief Peter Hee has applauded the judiciary following the recent court verdict convicting former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on multiple counts of abuse of power and money laundering, describing it as a historic moment in the nation’s ongoing fight against corruption.
The High Court sentenced Najib to 15 years’ imprisonment and fined him RM11.387 billion in the 1MDB case. His jail term will begin in 2028, after he completes his six-year prison sentence in the SRC International case.
With the conviction, Hee commended the judiciary for upholding the rule of law and ensuring that accountability prevails over privilege.
“The decision is a testament not only to the resilience of our judicial system but also to the collective determination of the Malaysian people who, in 2018, made the historic choice to change the government,” he said.
The 2018 general election, he emphasised, was more than a political transition. It was a nationwide assertion of integrity and accountability.
“Malaysians from all walks of life united under a shared vision that public office is a public trust, and those who betray it must be held accountable.
“Najib’s conviction, concerning the misappropriation of billions from the 1MDB fund, demonstrates that this vision was not in vain. The billions diverted from the nation’s coffers were a direct affront to the aspirations of the Malaysian people, and the verdict sends a clear message that abuse of power carries consequences, not matter how high the office,” he said.
The judgement, he added, reflected the spirit of the 2018 election that stand against impunity and systemic corruption.
