SIBU (Jan 19): Hope is placed for the Bukit Assek redevelopment project to enter implementation phase this year.

This was highlighted by Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang when met by reporters after performing the eye-dotting ritual on the ‘dancing troupe’s lion’ at the Datuk Kong Temple here on Sunday.

According to the Pelawan assemblyman, the 800-acre development has undergone through four years of studies, surveys and planning.

“It is considered one of the greatest ‘gifts’ to the people of Sibu from Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“After four years of studies, surveys and planning, I hope that in 2026, this project could finally be launched and several phases of its development could begin to welcome the new year,” he said.

Tiang, nonetheless, expressed confidence that 2026, which would mark the ‘Year of the Horse’ on the Chinese zodiac calendar, could serve as a catalyst for Sarawak’s continuous development by strengthening the values of resilience, unity, and shared prosperity.

“May this prosperity be enjoyed by all people regardless of ethnic or religious background so that we can continue to live in harmony and unity in order to build a stronger Sarawak.”

Talking about infrastructure upgrading projects in the area, Tiang said works on Jalan Ling Kai Cheng should reach completion by the end of this month, while Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah project should be ready by early May.

“However, I want to assure all residents and road users that this year will be the last year of them experiencing difficulties on Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah.

“After May, this road will enter a new phase with an upgrade to a dual-carriageway.

“I am pleased to report that this project is progressing smoothly and according to schedule,” he added.
