KUCHING (Feb 4): The police personnel who successfully apprehended a suspect during a car chase have been praised for their bravery in the line of duty.

The incident drew widespread attention after a video on social media showing a policeman clinging to a moving vehicle at the Mile 4 flyover in an attempt to stop the suspect went viral.

Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Saifullizan Ishak met with the personnel involved to personally convey his appreciation for their bravery, swift response, and unwavering commitment during the operation, which saw the successful arrest of the aggressive suspect.

“The daring action highlighted the dedication of the officers in ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order,” he said in a statement.

Saifullizan said the personnel’s willingness to risk their own safety, which saw one of them injured while attempting to detain the suspect, reflected the true spirit of ‘Polis dan Masyarakat Berpisah Tiada’ (police and community are inseparable).

“This incident demonstrates the Royal Malaysia Police’s strong commitment to ensuring peace and security in Sarawak remains well protected.

“I hope the successful operation serves as an example and motivates all members of the force to continue carrying out their duties with integrity, professionalism, and courage,” he said.

The incident began on Jan 31 when police tracked down a 35-year-old man linked to a housebreaking at Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho.

The suspect, driving a white compact car, attempted to escape when confronted, prompting the high-speed pursuit at the Mile 4 flyover.

During the operation, a policeman sustained minor injuries while apprehending the suspect.

The suspect, who was later tested drug-positive, was found to have 20 prior criminal records.
