KUCHING, Dec 2: Preliminary design works for the full-scale expansion of Miri Airport to increase the terminal’s capacity to four million passengers and upgrade key airside facilities are now being finalised.
Transport Minister Sarawak Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the expansion is significant as Miri Airport continues to face surging demand, having recorded 2.4 million passengers since 2019, well above its current design capacity of two million passengers.
“The preliminary design works, undertaken by the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak under the Ministry of Transport Malaysia, commenced in April 2025 and are on track for completion by December 2025.
“These works form the foundation for the next phase, a full-scale expansion that will increase terminal capacity to 4.0 million passengers, provide additional aerobridges, and significantly improve both landside and airside facilities,” he said during his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Sitting today.
According to Lee, the preliminary design package is now being finalised for submission to the federal government.
This will be followed by a Value Analysis and Value Engineering (VAVE) exercise to confirm the conceptual design elements and refine the estimated cost of the project.
“Once fully completed, the upgraded Miri Airport will not only enhance the overall passenger experience and streamline airport operations but also reinforce its position as a key regional hub in supporting Sarawak’s economic growth and connectivity objectives,” he stressed. — DayakDaily
