MIRI, 13 Oct: The Sarawak Government continues to commit itself to helping small and medium-sized traders through various initiatives to alleviate the burden of operating costs.
Through the Sarawak 2027 budget, 50 percent rent discount for premises and outlets continued next year, involving an allocation of rm10.8 million to ensure business continuity.
For Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Sarawak Economic Development Corporation's (SEDC) Miri Business Area, they welcomed the initiative of the Sarawak government while hoping that a 50 per cent business premises rental discount under Sarawak Budget 2027 can be sustained in the long term to help alleviate the burden of operating costs.
They described the initiative as an important aid in ensuring business viability, thus enabling traders to continue generating revenue in the face of current economic challenges.
Shafiee Optometrist trader, Shafiee July, 56, said he hoped the government could consider reducing rent rates permanently to help ease the burden on traders.
"If possible, we expect the reduction in rent rates to be maintained on a regular basis, from 100 percent to 50 percent. That's the most important thing", he said.
Meanwhile, Zell Enterprise merchant Bokhari Rajali, 64, also hoped the rent discount assistance could be continued for a longer period, even permanently if conditions permit.
"This 50 percent discount is very helpful. We hope that this aid can continue for longer, if possible forever", he said.
For Comel Store merchant Chai Shau Chung, 70, a reduction in rents could help merchants continue their business operations in the face of current economic challenges.
"We hope that SEDC can consider reducing rents so we can continue the business. We don't expect big profits, we just want to keep doing business and living our lives", he said.
Meanwhile, Green Fashion and Tailoring entrepreneur Jesminda Suliman, 53, hopes the facility can continue for a few more years, taking into account current economic conditions.
"We hope that this rent discount can continue for a few more years as the current economic situation is less affordable", he said.
Under Sarawak Budget 2027, the Prime Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that 50 percent rent discount for premises and outlets under local authorities as well as state legislatures will be continued next year, involving a total allocation of RM10.8 million.
According to him, the initiative has helped thousands of small traders and retail entrepreneurs reduce operating costs as well as maintaining business viability in the face of rising spending. - TVS
