SIBU (Feb 8): More people are encouraged to take up teaching as a career in order to solve the issue of shortage woes.
This was highlighted by United Chinese Schools Committee’s Association (Dong Zong) chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau at a dinner here on Friday to mark the retirement of SJK Tung Hua headmistress Yu Siong Chew.
“Teaching is a good profession, with a very good pay compared to many of those offered in the private sector.
“Join the teaching profession to ensure that we would have adequate teachers to provide our next generation of children with quality education,” said the Sibu Chinese paramount leader, who is also chairman of SJK Tung Hua School’s board of directors.
Lau said with the country facing nationwide shortage of teachers every year, the Education Ministry had been staging regular campaigns to encourage the people to take up the profession.
On Yu, Lau described her as ‘a committed, outstanding and a hardworking headmistress’.
“The school has registered improvements in both academic studies and co-curricular activities during her tenure.
“On behalf of the school’s board of directors, I express my deepest gratitude to her for contributing immensely to the school, as well as for pushing the quality of education higher,” he added.
