DROBOTEX gives youths hands-on experience in emerging technologies

KUCHING: Drone and robotics technology could become key areas in developing Sarawak’s highly skilled workforce, in line with industries increasingly driven by technology and innovation.

Opar assemblyman and Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (TEGAS) Board of Trustees member Billy Sujang said early exposure to these technologies is important in equipping young people with the technical, digital and problem-solving skills needed for the future.

He said drones and robotics are increasingly being used across various sectors, including agriculture, construction, logistics, manufacturing, environmental monitoring and emergency management.

“This requires young people to have technical and digital skills, problem-solving abilities and the capacity to adapt to technological changes,” he said at the closing and prize-giving ceremony of the Drone & Robotics Explore (DROBOTEX) 2026 programme here on Sunday (Sept 27).

He said programmes such as DROBOTEX provided students and youths with hands-on experience in programming, robot building, drone operation, problem-solving challenges and teamwork.

Billy said interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) should not be developed through theoretical learning alone, but supported by opportunities for young people to experiment, build and solve problems in real-life situations.

“When they are given the space to try and apply their knowledge, that interest can grow into skills that open pathways to education, careers and innovation.”
