KUCHING, 13 Oct: The full acquisition of Bintulu Port by the Government of Sarawak opens up space for more integrated restructuring of state port network, thus improving logistics efficiency and supporting long-term economic growth.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Majang Renggi said the government's priority after the acquisition is to ensure that port operations run smoothly without affecting consumer and trading partners affairs.
According to him, rigorous and continuous monitoring will be carried out through the Bintulu Port Board on critical aspects of the port including operational efficiency, cargo capacity, level of service as well as shipping turnaround period.
"To drive the transformation of the port sector, the government is focusing on four main pillars: optimising existing facilities and increasing capacity, modernizing work processes to reduce bureaucracy, holding regular round-the-clock sessions with industry players and coordinating development through Sarawak Ports Master Plan", he said.
He said this in response to a question by Member of the National Assembly (DUN) Tamin, Christopher Gira Sambang at the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Conference today.
Majang said the approach aims to improve time and cost efficiency in logistics chains, ensure supply chain smoothness as well as strengthen confidence of investors and players in the maritime industry.
In an effort to integrate Bintulu Port with other ports in Sarawak, he said, among the identified approaches was to place all state port authorities under a single regulatory body called the Sarawak Ports Authority.
"The role of ports will be grouped based on geographical advantages and industrial strengths to avoid functional overlap. The government also paid attention to improving the port tariff structure to create a fairer, more efficient and transparent market ecosystem", he said.
The efforts also included the classification of port facilities and infrastructure according to market requirements, as well as transformation of port management into corporate entities in order to enhance competitiveness and long-term sustainability.
According to Majang, Bintulu Port which is a major trade gateway and the country's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) export hub will continue to be strengthened through increased operational efficiency, infrastructure development and digitalisation.
The move is expected to strengthen the position of the Sarawak port network as an important driver for trade, investment and economic development of the state.
