KUCHING, 13 Oct: The Government of Sarawak is committed to ensuring the continued development of athletes after Sports Malaysia (SUKMA) through long-term talent development programmes including providing educational and career paths to ensure their future after completing competitive careers.

Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Development Sarawak, Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu said that the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) provides financial assistance and incentives based on athlete achievements, in addition to strengthening welfare aspects through more comprehensive monitoring.

"SSC is also setting up a dedicated unit for the welfare and development of athletes including planning their education paths as well as careers", he said.

He said this in response to a question by Tellian Member of the State Legislative Assembly (ADUN), Royston Valentine, at the Sarawak DUN Conference today.

Royston asked for clarification on the state government's strategy to ensure the momentum of post-School athlete development is continued through long-term talent development programs up to international level including provision of educational and career pathways after expiration as a competitive athlete.

In terms of education, Gerald explained, SSC is strengthening cooperation with the MARA University of Technology (UiTM), Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) as well as local public and private higher education institutions.

In fact, according to him, cooperation with institutions of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), including i-CATS and CENTEXS is also expanded to provide a skill-based and technical education pathway for athletes.

"SSC also explores career opportunities for former athletes in coaching, sports management, technical officers, fitness, sports science and event management.

"Employment opportunities in other sectors will also be considered on the basis of their respective skills and qualifications", he said.

Gerald said the athlete tracking system would be strengthened to monitor each athlete's performance, education, well-being, skills and career direction.

"Our goal is to ensure that Sarawak athletes not only excel in sports, but also have education, skills and clear career paths for the future", he explained. - TVS
