SIBU, July 20: Durian season is upon Sungai Merah, Sibu as customers flock to the durian stall located near Nai Siong Memorial Park like moths to a flame, eager to get a taste of the king of fruits.
The stall operator, who goes by the moniker Ah Sau, has been selling durian there for over 10 years and according to him, the durian he sells were acquired from Kapit.
“This (Kapit) durian bears fruit twice a year. Once in July and another during year end (December),” the 60-year-old told DayakDaily.
When asked what type of durian it was, Ah Sau answered that it was durian “kampung” (village), just like how some chickens are “ayam kampung” (village chicken).
He shared that over the years, there was a decline in durian production and attributed the declining numbers to the extreme climate change.
“For a durian tree to bear fruit, there should be not too much rain as it (rain) will prevent the durian flower from being pollinated.
“Good weather, with just enough rain and sun makes it favourable for the (durian) tree to bear fruits,” said Ah Sau.
During the brief interview, DayakDaily was presented a dainty durian with thick, yellow flesh that cost a reasonable RM10.
Despite its small size, the durian did not disappoint with its strong and delicious flavour.
The small durian is highly sought after by customers, as they crowded the stall to eat it on the spot, whereas the larger ones can range anywhere between RM10 and RM55. — DayakDaily
