KUCHING: E-hailing operators are a critical component of the public transportation industry.

Alongside bus operators and the upcoming ART system, e-hailing services are essential in creating a robust and comprehensive public transportation network in Kuching.

“Their flexibility, convenience and accessibility complement other modes of transport, providing residents with seamless connectivity across the city,” said Michael Kong Feng Nian, chairman of Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) through a statement on today (Aug 9).

“Today, LPKP Sarawak had a constructive meeting with representatives from MyCar, where we discussed our policies for commercial vehicles in Sarawak.

“It’s crucial to keep e-hailing operators informed of these policies and our expectations to ensure that their services are in full compliance and that they provide a safe, reliable, and pleasant ride experience for passengers,” he added.

MyCar, a Malaysian homegrown e-hailing platform, currently commands a 15 per cent market share of e-hailing rides in Malaysia.

After previously operating in Sarawak from 2017 to 2020, they are now planning a return to the Sarawak market.

“With their experience and renewed commitment, we eagerly anticipate their contribution to boosting the public transportation industry locally,” Kong said.

The entry of MyCar will introduce a fourth e-hailing operator into the Sarawak market, marking a significant step forward for the industry.

“As we continue to promote public transportation, e-hailing will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our transportation network is comprehensive and accessible to all.”

The increase in e-hailing operators will enhance connectivity and foster healthy competition, ultimately benefiting the people of Sarawak.

A vibrant, competitive market ensures that services remain high-quality, affordable, and responsive to the needs of the community.

“At LPKP Sarawak, we are committed to nurturing a dynamic and inclusive public transportation system, and we look forward to working with all stakeholders to achieve this vision,” Kong stressed.
