BINTULU: Sports and physical activities play a vital role in the development of children, not just for teenagers and adults, but beginning from a young age, noted Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of KEMAS Kindergarten Potential Day 2024 Zone 5 in the lobby of Dewan Suarah Bintulu today (Aug 7), he stressed the numerous benefits of introducing sports to children early on, particularly in developing both fine and gross motor skills.

“Gross motor skills involve the use of large muscles in the body for complex movements like running, jumping, climbing, and playing ball,” he explained.

“Meanwhile, fine motor skills involve smaller muscles for detailed tasks such as writing, colouring, building with blocks, and tying shoelaces.”

Pang noted that by engaging children in sports and physical activities early, they can build a strong foundation for comprehensive physical, social, and emotional development.

“Participation in sports also provides children with opportunities to learn about cooperation, teamwork, and overcoming challenges together.”

He further stressed that fostering an interest in sports requires collective efforts from all sectors, including the government, educational institutions, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), parents, and other relevant parties.

“Such cooperation ensures that sports become a part of a healthy lifestyle, allowing children to fully benefit from physical activities throughout their development.

“This not only aids in their physical and mental development but also encourages them to lead healthy, active lives.”

He expressed hope that initiatives like the KEMAS Kindergarten Potential Day would contribute to the holistic development of children, producing individuals with both explicit and implicit values.

This approach aligns with the Sarawak government’s aspirations to nurture healthy, active, cheerful and virtuous children.

“The Sarawak government’s aspiration in this matter is very much in line with the organisation of KEMAS Kindergarten/Taska Children’s Potential Day Zone 5 2024 by the KEMAS Department,” Pang added, noting that focusing on sports competitions in this event is an appropriate approach to achieving these developmental goals.
