SELANGAU (March 13): The Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS) 2026 initiative will help ease the burden of rising living costs for households while ensuring aid reaches underprivileged groups, said Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang.
Speaking at the launch of SKAS 2026 for the Tamin constituency at the Selangau District Office, Gira said the programme reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding public welfare, particularly those in need.
He added that the initiative was introduced under the leadership of Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to help Sarawakians cope with the rising costs of living.
The SKAS assistance will be distributed in three phases with a total allocation of RM539.8 million, expected to benefit more than 800,000 recipients across the state.
The first phase began on March 10 with RM179.6 million, the second phase is scheduled for May with the same allocation, and the third will roll out in November with RM180.6 million.
Gira said the aid is channelled through the S Pay Global to ensure recipients use it specifically for essential food items, while also promoting a transparent and efficient distribution process.
“Based on current records, more than 90 per cent of SKAS recipients this year have registered as S Pay Global users, while over 2,200 supermarkets and retailers across Sarawak have joined the programme since it was introduced last year,” he said.
Gira noted that the initiative benefits recipients while also supporting local businesses as well as SKAS merchants, promoting the development of a cashless ecosystem in the state.
The programme also featured the distribution of ‘bubur lambuk’ in conjunction with the Ramadan month to government agencies, community leaders and residents of Kampung Iban Islam Sekuau.
Gira expressed hope the SKAS initiative would strengthen ties between community leaders, government agencies and members of the public, while fostering unity and a spirit of togetherness among the local community.
