KUCHING, Dec 24: House owners can be fined RM250 if even a single mosquito larva is found in their homes, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng reminded residents today.
He said the fine is imposed under dengue control measures and is enforced regardless of the number of larvae detected.
“One larva will cost you RM250. By doing your part, you are also protecting yourself and your family.
“No doubt, if you are caught, you will be penalised,” he said when speaking at the Dengue Awareness Campaign organised by the Sarawak Health Department (JKNS) at Fu Yu Coffeeshop, Jalan Sekama.
Wee stressed that dengue prevention is not solely the responsibility of the government, health authorities or local councils, but also the public.
He urged residents to remain vigilant for dengue symptoms and to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.
Highlighting that stagnant water inside homes is a major mosquito breeding ground, Wee reminded residents that preventing such conditions is a personal responsibility.
“It is your responsibility to ensure there is no stagnant water in your home. Make sure you flush indoor drains and cover any exposed water containers. If you have ponds or other water features, remember to change the water regularly,” he said.
During the campaign, JKNS officers also demonstrated the use of larva control medication known as Abate.
However, Wee clarified that the programme was meant for awareness purposes and that not all households would receive the chemical.
He also called on residents to fully cooperate with health officers during inspections and fogging operations.
Residents were advised to spray their homes after fogging if officers are unable to access their premises.
Wee said continuous cooperation from residents is key to preventing dengue.
“We have done our part, and today’s campaign serves as a reminder for the public to play their role as well, so that there will be no more grey areas in Kuching,” he said. — DayakDaily
