KUCHING (Jan 10): The disaster relief team under the Federation of Chinese Associations Kuching-Samarahan-Serian Division (FCAKSS) distributed essential supplies to residents in flood-affected areas in Bau and the outskirts of Kuching.

Its president Dato Sri Richard Wee said that the relief operations were activated following continuous heavy rainfall that caused flooding in low-lying areas.

“Flooding caused by heavy downpours is often unpredictable. Residents, especially those living in low-lying areas, must remain vigilant, monitor official weather forecasts, and make early preparations,” he said in a statement.

He urged families to prioritise the safety of the elderly and children, and also called on the public to promptly report abnormal water levels to government disaster relief centres or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) so aid could be mobilised quickly.

“With the rainy season ongoing and festive seasons approaching, communities in flood-prone areas must pay closer attention to weather changes and take proactive measures to ensure their families’ safety.”

Meanwhile, the disaster relief team’s head and FCAKSS vice president Kapitan Tan Kok Chiang said the team had immediately contacted community leaders in affected areas upon receiving instructions from Wee to assess the situation and determine the number of affected families and their needs.

“Our team is working closely with government disaster relief agencies and fulfilling its humanitarian duty by providing essential supplies such as milk powder and diapers for children and the elderly,” he said.

The relief team spent seven consecutive hours delivering aid to Kampung Blimbin Krokong in Bau, Kampung Sungai Maong, and Kampung Gita Baru.

In Kampung Blimbin Krokong, supplies were handed over for 20 households involving 40 residents, while supplies were handed over for four households in Kampung Sungai Maong. All the essential supplies were passed to the respective village chiefs for distribution.

Among those involved in the relief mission were Ho Kai Hock and other team members.
