KUCHING (Oct 30): Sarawak’s emphasis on green economy has prompted the federal government to align its policies, said federal Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli.
He noted that high-impact initiatives led by the Sarawak government, particularly in green energy, have now become a focus for the federal government as well.
“The federal government’s policies are now very complementary to the areas prioritised by the Sarawak government.
“Previously, Sarawak was at the forefront of the energy transition to a green economy, which did not seem to align with the federal government’s agenda.
“However, since Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim took over (as Prime Minister), initiatives outlined in the National Energy Transition plan have ensured that Sarawak’s plans are now in harmony with the federal government’s efforts,” said Rafizi.
He was speaking to reporters after the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) engagement session here today.
Rafizi added that the aligned federal policy, when consistent with Sarawak’s economic planning, would undoubtedly facilitate and expedite progress of green economy development.
“This also applies to several decisions made previously regarding the delegation of authority to the Sarawak government to manage projects independently, as part of efforts to accelerate project implementations,” he said.
He emphasised that the 13MP engagement session was not intended to introduce new matters, as many initiatives have already been in progress.
“For the past two years, the Sarawak government and the federal government have been on the same page.
“Looking ahead to the next five years, from 2026 to 2030, the key focus will be on ensuring alignment and synergy in economic planning to realise economic performance goals for both the federal and Sarawak governments.
“Our belief is that what is good for Sarawak is good for Malaysia, and what is good for Malaysia is good for Sarawak.
“Therefore, we need to align and harmonise our efforts to achieve synergy and move with much greater momentum over the next five years,” he said.
The engagement session was part of the preparation process for the 13MP.
Two segments have been held today, involving civil servants and leadership from Sarawak government agencies, followed by a session with the public.
It was the fourth of such sessions after Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Melaka.
Rafizi said that his ministry will continue to engage with various groups, including industry stakeholders, youth and vulnerable communities throughout the next two months of the sessions this year.
“We look forward to gaining a comprehensive perspective from all parties.
“We will take their feedback into account, evaluate them, and harmonise our efforts, allowing us to plan more effectively. For instance, we will determine the budget needed for the five-year period from 2026 to 2030 based on our capabilities and national economic goals.
“Once we ascertain the required amount, this will also help us allocate resources and implement projects according to priorities, ensuring fair distribution among all states, including Sarawak,” he said.
