KUCHING, Feb 23: The federal and Sarawak governments are doubling down on efforts to secure sufficient, stable and affordable food supplies for the State.

The push was underscored at the first 2026 Technical Working Group (TWG) Meeting on Price Stabilisation for Sarawak today, chaired at the federal level by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

Nanta said the focus of the meeting was to ensure Sarawak’s basic food supply remains adequate, stable and reasonably priced amid ongoing cost of living concerns.

He stressed that the government’s strategy goes beyond enforcing price controls, placing strong emphasis on strengthening local production so that Sarawak becomes more resilient and less dependent on external factors.

“Through increased paddy production, the development of the cattle and poultry industries, and the empowerment of the fisheries sector, including its related supply chains, we are targeting more consistent output, reduced wastage and enhanced domestic supply capacity.

“This means that the supply of essential food items such as rice, meat, chicken, eggs and fish will be better secured and more stable in the long term,” he said in a Facebook post today.

He added that the initiatives are also expected to raise incomes of farmers, livestock breeders and fishermen, spur rural economic activities and support the growth of local processing industries.

At the same time, Nanta noted that price monitoring from farm to retail level will be strengthened to ensure greater transparency and fairness in the market.

He also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) for its proactive role in balancing the interests of consumers and traders.

“Our priority is the people. The government, through KPDN, will remain firm in ensuring prices stay reasonable and do not burden the rakyat,” he added. — DayakDaily
