Festival showcases creativity, energy and talent of Sarawak’s youth

SIBU: The Borneo International Street Dance Festival 2024 not only aims to boost tourism but also to promote Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage on the global stage.

According to Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, the festival is a celebration of creativity, energy, and the boundless talent of Sarawak’s youth.

“I am especially excited about the potential this festival holds, not just for the dancers and our local arts groups, but we have the opportunity to present Sibu to the world in a unique way—through the universal language of dance and music.

“This festival is not just about competition; it is about culture, unity, and the celebration of diversity,” he said in his speech at the festival’s opening ceremony last night (Oct 5).

He added that street dance and K-pop have captivated the hearts of millions around the globe, and today, these vibrant cultures find a home in Sibu.

“Our youth are at the heart of this movement, and it is with immense pride that I see them embracing this platform to showcase their talents,” he said.

He added that the “Blast Your Stage” programme within this festival—now at Stage 6.0—is a testament to the success of initiatives like The Stage, which he had the privilege to initiate.

“Through such youth-driven programmes, we create professional spaces where young people in Sibu can dream big, express themselves, and share their creativity with the world,” he added.

Meanwhile, speaking on the Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (SABERKAS) Bukit Assek, Chieng said that since its establishment in 1973, Saberkas has been the main pillar of youth and community engagement in Sarawak.

“Its dynamism in bridging all races, beliefs, and political affiliations continues to shape a bright future for our state. I welcome all young people to join the youth organisation, Saberkas,” he said.

The festival, organised by Saberkas Bukit Assek with support from local and regional arts organisations, features a series of competitions, including K-pop Cover, Open Style Battle, and Breaking categories.

With judges from Taiwan, South Korea, and other nations, the two-day event (Oct 5-6) offers a prize pool of RM35,000.
