KUCHING, Sept. 21: Fishing contest hosted by Rukun Neighbourhood (KRT) Kampung Muara Tebas has the potential to attract more visitors to the area, thereby boosting economic activity and helping increase local income.
Sarawak Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, said the promotion of the activities not only provides space for residents and fishing legs to participate in recreational activities, but also has the potential to be an attraction for visitors.
He, who is also a Member of the State Legislative Assembly (ADUN) Demak Laut said such efforts could open up opportunities for locals to earn income through increased economic activity in the area.
"A game like this has the potential to attract more visitors to Muara Bebas, thus contributing to local economic activity and providing opportunities that can support the income of the population", he said.
He said this when he inaugurated the release of the seeds for the squid during the fishing competition at Jeti Muara Bebas, here, last Saturday.
In the same programme, release of cod seeds was also held as an effort to support conservation and enhancement of fisheries resources in the area.
Dr Hazland also appreciated the JPLS for its assistance and support in achieving the program.
The first fishing competition brought together locals and anglers before concluding with a prize-giving ceremony for the participants.
The programme also serves as a platform to promote cooperation between JPLS, fishing community and people of Kampung Muara Bebas in efforts to conserve fishery resources and sustainability of aquatic ecosystems.
"Continuous cooperation between communities and authorities is essential in ensuring the continued conservation of fishery resources and supporting the sustainability of the aquatic environment and socio-economic development of local people", he said. - TVS
